In this assignment, students were tasked with story-boarding and creating an animatic in response to a nursery rhyme, in the style of an existing IP.
At it's core, the spider’s plight is something all people can relate to: putting time and energy into a task, only to find your efforts were in vain. This idea was explored with the plight anyone who has lost progress in the void of RAM can relate to, especially those in the creative industry!
I chose to draw from the style of The Amazing World of Gumball - the show has impeccable, exaggerated expressions that worked with the tone of the piece.
Exploratory Sketches and Concept Art
The beleaguered animator spider was based off the shape language of the striking Austracantha Minax (also known as the Christmas Spider or the Jewel Spider) because of the visual interest of the triangular spines, paired with the empathy of a wide, curvy face. These concepts were then refined and cleaned to match the proportions of the show.
